A MALVERN-based housing association has revealed plans to build 49 affordable homes at a site in Powick.

Fortis Living has applied for planning permission to build the houses on a green field site which lies between the Upton Road and the Malvern Road.

The site is outside Powick's development boundary, but has been allocated for development in the South Worcestershire Development Plan.

In its application, Fortis said that "development of this site would result in a small, immediate extension to the village in a well-established residential area".

"The development would have minimal impact upon local vistas or those further afield from the open countryside as the existing vegetation surrounding the boundaries of the site will be retained and augmented; also ensuring that the amenity of the existing residents neighbouring the site will not be unduly affected," it says.

Access is proposed through the existing housing estate called Winsmore, and residents there have already contacted Malvern Hills District Council to voice their misgivings.

Ronald Watts said: "While I have no comments as to the actual development I am strongly opposed to the proposed access.

"The 'village green' around which the proposed access will run is used constantly by small children for their games and they frequently run out onto the road to retrieve balls. I feel that with all the extra traffic this development will create will make it an accident waiting to happen. Surely there must be a safer and more logical way of providing access to this site."

And Felicity Williams said: "The planning application fails to acknowledge or address the difficulty of large construction vehicles needing to access the site.

"The section of road leading from the green in Winsmore to the site, is narrow and has a significant bend. Increasing traffic on this bend will vastly increase the likelihood of a serious accident."

The planning application will be decided by the district council.
