A ONCE popular Worcester pub has been bulldozed to make way for new housing.

The derelict Cavalier Tavern, in St George's Lane North, was once a favourite watering hole for Worcester City fans heading to support the team at their nearby St George's Lane ground, which was knocked down in 2014.

But now it has been consigned to the history books, knocked to the ground to make way for 13 single bedroom 'supported flats' being developed by Bromford Housing Group.

The flats will go alongside communal care support accommodation and associated car parking and external works.

The demolition has taken place after work to remove asbestos found on the site was completed.

Permission to knock down the Cavalier was granted by Worcester City Council's planning committee.

Cllr Joy Squires, who represents Arboretum, said: "It's a shame we haven't had a thriving pub on the beautiful canalside site.

"In an ideal world, that's what we would have. But, as that's not possible, developing the site for supported housing seems a sensible way forward."
