TWELVE new trees have been planted at the Hanleys Community Orchard by students from Hanley Castle High School.

The four students were supervised by the school's community liaison officer Grant Mathews and Hanley tree warden Peter Goodyear.

The trees, which include old Worcestershire varieties such as William Crump, Worcester Pearmain, Lord Hindlip and Newland Sack, came courtesy of the Tree Council and replaced trees that were dead or no longer productive.

Supporters of the community orchard have also been busy making apple juice from their own and other orchards.

Malcolm Fare of the committee said: "When villagers heard that we were picking apples from the orchard for juice, many offered their own crops, so that we ended up with 1,450 bottles of apple juice, of which we have now sold more than half. We would like to thank all those people who have bought and hopefully enjoyed our juice.

"The community orchard committee will be meeting early in the new year to finalise the orchard picnic days for 2016 and to organise labelling of all the trees."
