LIFEGUARDS from Worcestershire have been a big help during the floods in York, performing 20 rescues so far and bringing in vital supplies.

South Worcester Lifeguards flood team has been in Yorkshire for last four days performing 20 rescues in flood-hit York.

One evacuation involved an 84-year-old and a 14-year-old was also rescued from the flood water.

The work has now shifted to more humanitarian relief efforts, including supplying food and medicine.

However, they could be in Cumbria tonight as more heavy rain is expected due to Storm Frank.

Club chairman Adrian Mayhew said on Monday: "The team got deployed on Boxing Day evening and headed up to the North East where they we deployed to Halifax.

"Since then they have been redeployed to York city in aiding the rescue and evacuation effort.

"The team with their specialist Flood Rescue Boat has been asked to stay on with continued support for humanitarian support tomorrow."

He told the Worcester News today that they could pontentially be deployed to Cumbria as high rain is forecast from Storm Frank which has resulted in an amber warning from the Met Office.

He added: "This front is expected to drop up to 140mm of rain fall in some place which is more that was dropped on Boxing Day.

Mr Mayhew said he was delighted with the teams response with the work effort and the support shown.
