A PROJECT by Malvern Town Council to restore historic gas lamps at the town's railway station has been commended at a national awards ceremony.
The scheme at Great Malvern station was shortlisted for the Heritage Railway Association’s 2015 Supporters’ Award at this year's National Railway Heritage Awards.
Town mayor Julian I'Anson attended the awards ceremony at Merchant Taylors’ Hall in London, where he was presented with a highly commended certificate for the restoration work by Lord Faulkner of Worcester.
The Heritage Railway Association’s chairman of adjudicators, Robin Leleux, said: “Small projects interest us as much as large ones, so we welcomed the restored GWR lamp standards in the Station Approach at Great Malvern.”
Steven Bridle, senior properties historian at English Heritage, praised the project’s attention to detail and faithful recreation of the intensity and hue of gas lamplight.
Many of the adjudicators gave their individual congratulations to the mayor for the project.
“This is an excellent result for the town council,” Cllr I’Anson said. “The gas lamps at Great Malvern station provide an iconic welcome to our town, and both the result and the Heritage Railway Association judges’ comments are a ringing endorsement of the restoration work.”
