PLANS to extend a sand and gravel quarry near Upton will come up before Malvern Hills district councillors next week.

Cemex UK Materials Ltd has applied for permission to expand the quarry at Ryall Court, close to the River Severn.

The decision rests ultimately with Worcestershire County Council, but the application is on the agenda at Wednesday's meeting of the district council's southern area development management committee.

If allowed, the quarry would provide some 1.4 million tonnes of sand and gravel, to be extracted over the next eight years.

The application also calls for the building of a new wharf for the loading of the sand and gravel into barges to be transported to the existing processing facilities at Ryall House Farm, a short distance downriver.

And once the site has been exhausted, it will be restored as a lake.

Planning officers are advising that the proposal should be supported, but with conditions to landscaping, the impact of noise and dust nuisance, the impact on the highways and other matters.
