100 years ago It was reported in Malvern yesterday that Sir Henry Campbell-Bannerman, the Prime Minister, would arrive at Great Malvern Station about 7.30, and consequently a large number of local Liberals were on the platform to welcome their political chief. Sir Henry arrived at 7.34 in a special saloon from Paddington, and was soon recognised by the crowd, who raised a cheer, to which he made acknowledgement by raising his hat. Sir Henry, who looked very fatigued, walked along the platform with a lady friend, and was met in person by Mr Moerschell, who conducted his distinguished visitor through the private entrance of the Imperial Hotel. Malvern Gazette, May 18, 1907 THE celebrated 14th Century screen at Bosbury Church, so far as the top of it is concerned, has been restored by replacing the old cresting and carving, which had been destroyed. Fortunately, designs for the carving were obtained from the old screen which used to be in position in Ledbury Church, and which is of exactly the same date. Luckily, parts of it still remain. 50 years ago Mr Harold Steele of Malvern, now in New Delhi, en route to the British hydrogen bomb test area in the Pacific, met Mr Nehru, the Indian Prime Minister, on Wednesday, for 20 minutes. Mr Steele said Mr Nehru told him: "The good wishes and prayers of the people of India are with you". The Prime Minister had also told him "some good" would result from his projected trip to the Pacific. Malvern Gazette, May 17, 1957.

25 years ago Malvern Hills College is to merge with Worcester Technical College from September 1 this year. Staff not required under the new structure will be given notice later this month. The decision, taken by Hereford and Worcester County Council further education sub-committee on Monday, confirms the worst fears of college staff and students. The proposal of a Worcester-Malvern merger was first put forward by education chairman Councillor Nigel Laville last year. Malvern Gazette, May 20, 1982.

A STATEMENT in the County Structure Plan, which could raise a few eyebrows and quicken a few heartbeats in Ledbury, particularly in Deer Park, should not be taken too seriously. The plan states that a site of 40.80 hectares, nearly 100 acres, is still available for housing development at Deer Park. It has now been confirmed that the figure is almost certainly a mistake. Ledbury Reporter, May 20, 1982.
