POLICE are warning people of Worcester to be vigilant following a report of a bogus caller.

The victim, a woman in her twenties, reported that a man knocked on her door and tried to gain entry under the pretence of needing to check her gas meter.

The woman did not recognise the man as working for the company that normally does this.

The man was not carrying any form of identification.

It happened between 11am and 11:30amon Wednesday, November 11 in the Wain Green area of the city (Warndon Villages).

The male was described as white and was thought to be in his thirties. He was approximately 5'9" and of medium build.

He is also thought to speak with an Eastern European accent.

At the time of the incident he was wearing a black knitted jumper and dark blue cargo trousers that had lots of pockets. He also had short, "messy", brown hair.

Investigating officer PC Andrew Todd said: "I am keen to speak to any witnesses who may have seen someone in the area matching that description., or anyone that has had someone matching that description come to their address claiming to work for a gas company."

West Mercia Police says genuine callers will usually make an appointment first, carry identification, to always put the chain on the door before it is opened and ask to see identification.
