A BONFIRE night at the Marlbank Inn in Welland, near Malvern, was a big success, according to the organisers.

Landlady Val Webb claimed the evening – which featured a colourful fireworks display set to the music of Disney classics – was well attended and had a great atmosphere.

The event was held in aid of Help for Heroes, with children from Welland Pre-School in Marlbank Road collecting cash for the military charity.

Mrs Webb said: “This was the third year we have run the bonfire and fireworks night.

“Everybody told us it was a great evening and the collection for Help For Heroes went pretty well.”

But her claims of a successful evening come as one Welland resident complained that “irresponsible parking” on both sides of the A4104 caused congestion, blocked the way for pedestrians and made the road impassable for a lorry.

This led to a “chaotic” jam that took 15 minutes to clear with blame lying with both the pub and motorists, according to the eyewitness, who asked not to be named.

The pub landlord however countered that she had not been made aware of any traffic or parking issues and that it was “business as usual” during the evening.

She added: “I’m at a bit of a loss as to why someone has complained.

“We have got quite a big car park which was available to visitors and most of the people who attended the bonfire and fireworks night walk up from the village.”

The total figure raised for Help For Heroes has not yet been counted.
