A WORCESTERSHIRE MP is backing calls for George Osborne to give the town a good turn in the Government's big spending review.

Nigel Huddleston told your Worcester News he has been helping to lobby the Chancellor over fresh funding to make Worcestershire's key aims a reality.

As we revealed on Tuesday Worcester MP Robin Walker has written to Mr Osborne to suggest that fairer school funding, more hospital parking, a two-hour train service to London and dualling the A4440 Carrington Bridge is what needs investment the most.

It comes ahead of the Comprehensive Spending Review which is due on Wednesday, November 25 and will spell out how the Government expects to spend its money up to 2019/20.

Mr Huddleston, who represents Mid-Worcestershire, said: "Lots of MPs have been lobbying the Chancellor over their areas and I'm no different.

"What people have got to remember is that despite the fact he's looking to balance the books and help reduce the national deficit there is still this huge capital spend going into the country that we all want to see spent in our constituencies."

He also said he was prepared to "hassle" Education Secretary Nicky Morgan for fairer school funding to ensure the Government delivers.

"I'm a member of the governing party but not a member of this Government, which means I'm fully prepared to put pressure on ministers and hassle her all I can to make sure we get this," he said.

"Worcestershire has been unfairly treated on school funding and by the flight of historical accident it's got worse and worse and worse, over many years.

"It will clearly take a period of time to narrow the gap but we need it to happen.

"Part of the problem is that this country has a £60 billion yearly national debt on interest payments for schools, which is morally indefensible.

"That's more than we actually spend on defence or education."

His comments come two weeks after he delivered a speech in parliament on school funding, highlighting the near £1,000 per-pupil shortfall county children get compared to Birmingham.
