OLDER people in the Malvern area have been venturing into the wonderful world of the internet thanks to a new community initiative.

Silver Surfers is a newly-established community interest company, which helps people who have never used computers before get started online. It covers basic computer tasks, how to use the internet, and how to use email.

Company director Bill Deavall said: "What's great about these courses is that it gives many people basic computer skills and a new interest in life that they didn't have before.

“Many older people can feel isolated in their own community, and these classes help this age group in particular communicate better online.

"They're all great to teach, we have a bit of fun during the sessions, and I work with many of them individually afterwards and can see how their new skills are making life more fun and enjoyable. This means that they can be much more engaged with family and friends in the digital world."

And the feedback from people who have been on the courses is positive.

Chris Traherne said: “I heard about the Silver Surfers courses through the library. Bill taught me a lot completely from scratch, I had no idea at all how to do this when I started.

“Now I can go online to check my premium bonds, investments, search for the best offers and a lot more. For example I can now go online and download music, which I would never have thought about before the courses.”

Greta Venables also appreciated the support. She said: “I was desperate to have some more help because I didn’t know anything at all about computers. I have never in my life before touched a laptop or a computer. Since my husband died, many people have been telling me to start using the internet and now I can use my laptop at home.”

Library manager Niru Fallon said: "It makes it really worthwhile to know that they are making a real difference to people's quality of life.

"We have fantastic facilities for up to 25 people to use our computers but sadly many people just don't know where to begin. These sessions give them confidence to come along, learn the basics and make better use of the great facilities on offer here in our local community."

The classes are free to attend. For more information, speak to staff at the library in Graham Road, or call Worcestershire Hub on 01905 822722 and ask to be connected to Malvern Library, or call Silver Surfers on 01684 541892.
