A RECORD number of students have each won a £1,000 scholarship for outstanding academic achievement at the University of Worcester.

A total of 156 scholarships have been awarded this year to students including Scott Williams, 39, of Newcastle Close, Worcester, who is studying for a degree in graphic design and multimedia.

He said: “As a mature student returning to education after many years working, I was uncertain as to how well I’d adjust to student life or even if I’d be capable academically.

“It’s been hard work and not without sacrifice, so to receive recognition for my academic achievement is a real honour and makes it all worthwhile.”

Fellow mature student Joanna Jeffree, of Sebright Avenue, Worcester, who is studying English, said: “I am surprised and delighted to have been awarded a scholarship.

"I have very much enjoyed my time at university so far. I have learned so much - my lecturers are brilliant and I love my course.”

Accounting student Juliana Mihejeva, 28, of Mayflower Road, Droitwich, added: “I feel very happy about achieving an academic scholarship.

"I’m very grateful to my tutors at the University of Worcester for their support and help during my studies.”

Students were presented with their scholarships by the university’s vice chancellor and chief executive, professor David Green, at a special ceremony at the University of Worcester Arena.

Professor Green said: “Congratulations to all those students on their achievement.

"Commitment combined with ability and excellent teaching produces outstanding results and we are delighted that these students are thriving here at Worcester.

"Winning a scholarship further improves our students’ already excellent job prospects on graduation as well as providing welcome practical support.

“It is only right that students who excel here at the University of Worcester are rewarded and we are working hard with our many partners to create even more opportunities for students to earn scholarships, prizes and placements next year.”
