UPTON Town Council will spend more than £100 on a plaque to be placed on the front of The Memorial Hall.

£135 will be spent on the brass plaque to advertise the fact that the council operates from the building.

When it went to vote at the the council's meeting on Tuesday (September 15), ten councillors voted in favour of purchasing the plaque, which is ten by five inches.

There was one vote against, in the form of cllr Eric White, and no abstentions.

The move comes after recent addition to the council, Graham Francis, suggested action needs to be taken to tackle low attendances at its meetings.

Cllr Francis, who was elected to take to the council after this year's elections, claimed people in the town don't know where, or when, the town council meets because it is not advertised widely enough by the body.

He even suggested The Memorial Hall should be re-named the Town Hall, to avoid any confusion in the role it plays in Upton.

He said: "People do not know we are here. Should we not advertise this more on the hall’s doors?

"We should at least have two signs on the doors, one for the Memorial Hall and one for Upton Town Council."

However, cllr White suggested a lack of interest is the reason council meetings are not well attended.
