A REVIVED Armed Forces Day, a firework display and a new series of music events in Malvern's parks are just some of the ideas being floated by Malvern Town Council.

At the first meeting of the council's newly-created events committee this week, members agreed to ask for an extra £5,000 to help finance the proposed new events for 2016.

The council is seeking to expand its slate of events, which currently includes the Bands in the Park summer season and the Christmas lights switch-on.

Eadwine Brown, who was appointed as the council's events co-ordinator earlier this summer, said he had canvassed council members for ideas and had created a list of possible events.

He said the Armed Forces day had been held twice, once successfully and once less so, and there was still money in the council's existing events budget to stage it again next year, plus the possibility of getting extra funding from the Ministry of Defence .

He said: "We have £3,000 in the budget and the MoD has up to £10,000 that it could provide."

He said that Victoria Park in Malvern Link was the most obvious place to hold the event, which would be held on Saturday, June 25 next year.

He said: "It has the space for an arena-type area set up to allow parades and drill demonstrations to take place."

Coun Ian Hopwood said he would get in touch with the town's cadet organisations and with the Lord Lieutenant of Worcestershire's office about participation.

Victoria Park was also agreed as a good venue for a proposed firework display in November 2016.

Mr Brown said he had been in touch with professional firework companies and has been quoted a cost of £1,000 for a ten-minute firework display suitable for a crowd of about 400 spectators.

Coun Cynthia Palmer said: "We've got to have some kind of event which will draw people in, with the fireworks as the finale."

And another series of public music events, to complement the popular Bands in the Park with a greater range of music types, is also being considered.

Mr Brown said he will report the progress on these ideas when the committee meets again at the end of September.

The council will also consider working with other organisations on events such as a carnival for summer 2016, an event celebrating the town's independent traders and businesses, and a health and wellbeing event featuring local gyms, and fitness instructors.
