WHILE many enjoy the warm weather of the summer months, for those with allergies it can mean weeks on end of pain and discomfort.

And health bosses in Worcestershire have advised those affected by conditions such as asthma, hay fever or eczema to visit a pharmacy for advice on dealing with the problem.

The amount of people suffering with the three allergies is reported to have trebled over the last 20 years and up to half of those affected are children.

All three conditions are particularly prevalent in the summer and can affect emotional wellbeing, social plans and performance at work, college, school or university.

Chief clinical officer with NHS South Worcestershire Clinical Commissioning Group Dr Carl Ellson said: “Summer can be a difficult time for those suffering from allergies but there are many over-the-counter remedies that your local pharmacy can offer to help ease the symptoms and help you get through the summer months.

“Local pharmacists are fully trained health professionals who can offer advice on many over the counter medicines, such as antihistamines.

“These block the action of the chemical histamine, which the body releases when it thinks it is under attack from an allergen.

“They may also recommend other remedies that can help to relieve a blocked nose, which is often caused by hay fever, a dust allergy or a pet allergy.”
