DOG owners are being urged to vaccinate their dogs after a stray was discovered in Worcester with a potentially killer disease which is on the increase across the county.

Bourbon, who was found earlier this month wandering the city streets, was diagnosed with Parvo when he was picked up by Worcestershire Regulatory Services’ Dog Wardens.

Parvo is a highly contagious viral disease which can be easily contained in dogs with simple vaccinations. But if the condition is not treated dogs will develop symptoms, including severe diarrhoea, and the results can be fatal.

Dog Warden Pip Singleton is urging dog-owners to boost their pet's vaccinations each year – and if they can’t afford them to seek help rather than dumping their poorly dogs.

She said: "I keep saying this but having a dog costs a lot in time and money, and people need to think twice before committing to getting one.

"If your dog contracts Parvo then the vet's bills will be much bigger than the cost of vaccinations and boosters – hence why these poor creatures are just dumped."

Over the last two years she has seen a five-fold increase in the number of cases of Parvo in the strays she has picked up.

"It used to be one or two cases a year but I have had over ten cases in the last couple of years.

"People need to be educated on this vile disease and to take action to stop it spreading and causing suffering to other animals" said Miss Singleton.
