THE family of a mother of six from Evesham who died last year have raised thousands of pounds for the hospice where she was cared for in her final days.

Christina Swann spent her final two weeks at the inpatient unit at St Richard’s Hospice in Wildwood Drive, Worcester, before she died aged 80 last summer.

Since then her daughter Angie has raised almost £3,000 for the charity with the help of Birmingham building firm JS Wright, where she works as a receptionist.

The company has named the hospice as their charity of the year and has carried out a number of fundraising activities, including the directors agreeing to be locked in stocks and splatted with wet sponges in exchange for a donation at the firm’s 125th anniversary garden party last month.

Miss Swann said she was pleased to be able to give something back to the hospice which helped make her mother’s final days comfortable.

“Mom had a short illness and spent almost two weeks at St Richard’s with wonderful caring staff on hand 24 hours a day,” she said.

“Nothing was too much trouble for them.

“We were able to wheel Mom out whilst lying in bed onto the patio overlooking the garden watching the ducks.

“It truly was a perfect place.”

She added she was especially thankful to the hospice staff for their hard work and compassion.

“Not only did they care for Mom but supported each and every one of us, allowing us to have our last precious moments as children, grandchildren, sister and aunt,” she said.

“We can never repay St Richard’s for our final loving memories so by fundraising it helps give a little back so that others can have the precious memories they deserve. “

Miss Swann, who lives in Birmingham and previously raised cash for the hospice by running the Worcester 10k, added she was “really touched” when JS Wright, where she has worked for nearly six years, named St Richard’s Hospice as its charity of the year.

The family have also previously fundraised for the hospice by taking part in its annual Waterways Walk.

St Richard’s Hospice provides free specialist palliative care and support for more than 2,600 patients living with life-threatening illnesses and their families every year.

The charity runs a day hospice as well as a 24 hour, 17 bed inpatient unit at its headquarters in Wildwood Drive.
