PITY alone never saved a single life.
It is not enough to look with compassion upon someone in desperate need, then cross the road and pass by on the other side, assuming others will come to assist.
Our celebration last week of the life of Sir Nicholas Winton reminded us that mere bounds of common humanity should be enough to compel us to act.
