EVESHAM Sea Cadets will be travelling from distance from Lands End to John O'Groats to celebrate their 25th anniversary, and they won't even have to leave their home town.

Members of the local unit will be celebrating their silver anniversary, on July 4, by cycling, rowing and walking the 874 miles at six different locations around Evesham, including the Country Park, Tesco's and in the town centre itself

Chief Petty Officer, Keith Field, Commanding Officer, said he was thrilled to have had such an exciting year already.

He added: “We have had another fantastic year. We are certainly amongst the top echelon of units from around the country, winning the Stephenson's trophy for the past two years, awarded to the top unit in the South West of England, and being awarded the Captain's Cup in March by the Captain Sea Cadets. In the past few months alone we have competed at the national five-a-side event at RAF Cranwell in Lincolnshire, won our paddle-sports regatta for a third time in a row, had twelve cadets on a six day offshore voyage, all on top of our usual weekly activities of mountain biking, sailing, windsurfing, field craft and rowing to name just a few."

A national spokesman for the Sea Cadets said: "We also have had another great year and were thrilled to commission a brand new tall ship to replace our former flag ship. The new vessel will support 900 young people on a week long voyage at sea every year. It offers a unique environment where they can find inspiration and confidence as they work together as a team, hoisting sails as they navigate Britain’s coastal waters. It is the pinnacle of the sea cadet experience and one which over 30,000 young people have enjoyed since 1971."
