A restaurant worker took his brother's expensive Jaguar car and showed off to friends before crashing into the wall of a converted pub in Malvern, a court heard.

Rubel Alom's conduct in the early hours of June 14 last year was described as "a drunken escapade" by Judge Toby Hooper QC at Worcester Crown Court when he imposed a suspended prison sentence, fines and a driving ban.

Alom, aged 30, of Worcester Road, Malvern, pleaded guilty to aggravated vehicle taking, driving with excess alcohol and without insurance and a valid licence.

His 12-month jail sentence was suspended for 18 months and he was ordered to carry out 220 hours unpaid work and pay £1,000 court costs. He was also ordered to pay £500 compensation to David Hill, owner of the property which was damaged. He was disqualified from driving for 18 months.

Prosecutor John Brotherton said Alom had been drinking when he took the Jaguar XK8 belonging to his brother Mohammed, who ran The Cave restaurant. He went with friends to the Priors Croft wine bar before showing off at the wheel on the A449.

He had only gone a short distance before he crashed into a wall of the former pub The Old Vaults, which was now residential property. Damage was estimated at £5,200 and the £6,000 Jaguar was a write-off.

Alom was not hurt but his uncle, who was in the rear seat received injuries which were treated in hospital. When police tracked Alom down, they found him in bed pretending to be asleep. When he was breath-tested, he was found to be one and a half times the legal limit. Alom lied he was not the driver but eventually pleaded guilty.

Mr Brotherton said Alom had a record of minor dishonesty before being jailed in 2008 for a drugs offence.

Speaking to your Worcester News, Rubel Alom said: This doesn't affect the business. The business is running fine. Come and eat the food. The food is beautiful. Please don't let this put you off coming to the restaurant. The curry didn't do the crime."
