OVER 90 pupils from primary schools in and around Malvern were the guests when Malvern College held an open day to celebrate the Magic of Science.

The event, at the college's new Razak Science Centre, began with Dr Rebecca Kaner of Warwick University demonstrating chemical processes ranging from creating elephant’s toothpaste to deep-freezing a banana with liquid nitrogen.

The pupils were then allowed into the labs, where they performed experiments in physics, chemistry and biology, including testing Newton’s theories by measuring the speed of a chain as it slid off a table, looking at various types of chemical reactions in test tubes and investigating their own senses and responses to stimuli.

The event was part of the celebrations of the 150th anniversary of the college's founding. The schools attending were Broadwas, Callow End, Wyche, Malvern Wells and Malvern Parish primary schools.

Dr Natalie Watson, head of chemistry at the college, said: "The Magic of Science day was a great success. The children were very excited about the demonstrations that they saw and the experiments they were able to perform for themselves in the labs. It was a fun-filled, hands-on experience enjoyed by everyone involved.”
