ONLY a handful of parishes in the area will be going to the polls on Thursday, May 3.

Where the number of candidates is fewer than the number of seats, one of the first duties of the new council will be to co-opt willing members from among local residents.

In Ledbury, it means the town council will not be able to go for Quality Council status because only 13 people have put their names forward for the 18 seats.

Clive Jupp, a long-serving councillor and former mayor said: "The real pity of it is that we can't go in for Quality Council status. One of the criteria is that you have to have all the councillors elected by ballot.

"It's a real shame, because the council has all the other qualifications needed."

Quality Council status would mean the council taking on a greater range of responsibilities, with money coming down from Herefordshire Council.

Among the councillors standing down is veteran Peter Harling, along with and Catherine Lumby, Amanda Nicholl, Lilian Farley, Derek Cursons and Andrew Bullock.

An election will take place in Bromyard, where 24 hopefuls are standing for the 18 town council seats.

Residents will also be going to the polls in neighbouring Whitbourne, where ten candidates are contesting nine seats. In Brockhampton, there are five candidates for three seats.
