A NEW CT scanner is to be installed at a Worcestershire hospital to meet increasing patient demand.

The state of the art Toshiba Aquilion Prime scanner will be up and running alongside the existing scanner at Redditch’s Alexandra Hospital next month, allowing staff to see more patients and meet targets.

CT scans create images of the inside of the body and are more detailed than a standard X-Ray. Scans take up to 10 minutes and are used to produce images of internal organs, blood vessels, bones and tumours.

CT superintendent radiographer Emma Land welcomed the announcement.

“The development will also allow us to create extra jobs and provide an improved service for our patients,” she said.

“We plan on using one scanner just for outpatient appointments and the other for emergency patients and those on the wards.

“The extra scanner will also allow us more flexibility when maintenance or servicing is required, meaning patients will less likely need to travel to another hospital to have their scans performed.

“It’s going to be a huge benefit to the local population and our team is excited about the new development.”

Over the last 12 months more than 57,500 CT scans have been performed at the Alex, Worcestershire Royal Hospital and Kidderminster Hospital, an increase from 54,900 the previous year.
