AFTER four decades of service a much loved Hanley Castle High School teacher has retired.

Roger Cutts, a technology teacher who was also part of the maintenance team, said goodbye to the school he has served for 40 years and bid farewell to staff and pupils at a special presentation in the school's sports hall.

Lindsey Cooke, headteacher of the school, said: "It is rare to find such loyalty, hard work and dedication as Roger has shown to Hanley Castle.

"The fact he has taught so many local people and that he is so fondly regarded by us all marks him out as a very special person."

Mr Cutts had one last gift for the school, as he unveiled a lectern which he had made himself out of old school desks and parts of the old school's signage. This lectern now takes centre stage during assemblies and functions.

He said it would be hard to leave the school, but it means he can spend more time with his grandchildren.
