MUSICIANS from in and around West Malvern will be converging on the village church for a musical marathon in aid of its organ.

The event next Saturday, May 16, has been organised by West Malvern resident and organ player John Raine, following an appeal to raise £13,000 for urgent repairs to the instrument.

The organ at St James's Church needs to be given a new electrical system at a cost of £29,000. The church has £16,000 to contribute towards the work, but the rest must be raised locally.

On the day, the music will begin at 10am, and the 12-hour concert will feature 18 performances, some half an hour in length, others lasting a full hour.

The performances will showcase a range of musical styles, featuring a mix of ensembles, choirs and solo instruments, including the organ itself.

Among the performers taking part are Charles Pavey, Eileen Tomlin, Padraig O’Dubhlaoidh, Neil Poulter and Flatworld, Niamh, Victoria, Cerys and Helen Roskams, and Will Coleman and The Trench Choir.

Mr Raine said: "We are looking for good support from the public for our performers, and at just £5 per hour or £15 for a full-day ticket, to come and go as you wish, this should be a really enjoyable and good-value opportunity not to be missed".

The all-day concert is one of a series of fund-raising events being held for the organ appeal.

And Rev David Nichol is also urging residents to contribute by sponsoring individual components, such as switches for £10, solenoids for £50 and pistons for £100.

Anyone who can help is urged to contact Mr Nichol at the Vicarage, 2 North Malvern Road, or by phoning 01684 561126.
