A POSSE of cyclists braved high winds on Sunday when they racked up a total of 300 miles for charity.

The doughty pedallers were taking part in the the Mad Malvern Cycle Challenge, organised by town mayor Julian Roskams.

The event attracted 12 cyclists in three teams, who took off around a circular course, starting at 10.30am at Victoria Park, Malvern Link.

The course formed a loop that took in Welland, Hanley Castle and Hanley Swan, before returning to the start point, and each cyclist covered the course several times to complete the required distance.

Three teams entered the cycling challenge – Duck Doo’s, Bombay Bicycle Club, and Team 111 – and all three teams completed their laps of the 20-mile course “despite the bike going backwards at one point,” as one rider reported.

The aim was to raise money for Age UK and Dementia UK, Cllr Roskams' two chosen charities for his term of office, and their efforts netted over £100 for the cause.

While they cycled through the blustery winds and intermittent sunshine, back at Victoria Park, vintage flying chairs, a bouncy castle, and Malvern Town Council’s lucky dip stall drew a small crowd throughout the day.

Eadwine Brown, the council's events and operations officer, said: "Malvern Town Council would like to thank all those who cheered the riders off, or had a go on the bouncy castle in aid of a good cause, and of course the riders themselves – Team Ducky Doo’s (Dave, Matt and James Ireson, Mark Williams and Ash Harford, Team Bombay Bicycle Club (Kevin Hockney, Jonathan Haggath, Peter Lee, Geoffrey Barham and Julian Roskams); and the intrepid Team 111 (Steve Price and Penny Harris). Congratulations to one and all."
