A YOUNG man injured in a quad bike crash has opened his eyes and gripped his mum's hand in hospital as she says 'miracles really do happen'.

Nick Ferrier suffered a serious head injury following the accident in Green Lane, Rainbow Hill, Worcester at around 10am on Sunday, March 22 and has been in a critical but stable condition in the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham ever since.

However, his mum has always said Nick is a 'fighter' and has expressed hope after he opened his eyes and gripped her hand.

Janie Ferrier wrote on Facebook: "This has been the longest 10 days of my life but mostly the hardest 10 days of my life.

"At one point I even thought I was going to lose my boy but miracles really do happen. Tonight he opened his eyes, gripped my hand, bit the tubes and even had the nerve to yawn after sleeping for so long.

"My boy is a fighter. He is strong and WILL get through this. It's early days I know and with all the support from family and friends I know we will all get through this.

Thank you everyone for your well wishes and genuine concerns."

The 22-year-old was flown to the trauma unit at the QE by air ambulance after he struck two cars while riding the bike and was thrown into a brick gate pillar, suffering a serious head injury.

One Stop in Brickfields Road, Worcester, has been collecting money in a bucket which they hope to give to Janie Ferrier to help her with travelling costs back and forth between the hospital.

The shop is used by the family and the idea for the collection came from shift manager Lynsey Band, aged 29, who spoke to Ms Ferrier in the shop after the accident.

All 13 staff member have rallied behind the cause because of concern for Nick and his family.

Store manager Sabrina Day said: "We wanted to support his mum and his family through a tough time really."
