A GREEN-FINGERED volunteer is hoping to promote the benefits of gardening to young people in Malvern.

June Baguley, of Malvern Wells, has spent three years helping to transform the grounds of the Malvern Cube community centre in Albert Road North.

The site now includes vegetable growing patches, 10 fruit trees in a crescent and a peace garden based on the Quaker principles of simplicity, equality, truth and peace – and she is now hoping to get more young people involved in the green space.

“We are really trying to develop the grounds at the Cube so people can come along and enjoy them”, said the volunteer.

“Hopefully it will inspire visitors to plant their own vegetables or fruit.

“We have a mission statement to get young people and less-advantaged people involved in gardening. This can be difficult but the offer is there.

“People can come and see how things are grown, how cheap it is and we can talk to them about food recipes and nutrition.

“The vegetable beds in particular are there for people who want to learn about gardening and who are finding it hard to manage in everyday life.”

Broccoli and purple sprouts are currently being harvested from the gardens while root vegetables are being planted for the future.

Last year the site, which operates a gardening by moon phases approach, had bumper harvests across all produce and a 2ft parsnip was even grown.

Once picked items are bagged and available in the Cube, in return for a voluntary donation.

Anyone interested in getting involved can drop-in at Malvern Cube every Tuesday from 9am to 1pm.
