MY post earlier this month about Worcester's six most overlooked interesting buildings struck a chord with Helen Large, marketing and events manager at Museums Worcestershire.

She was particularly interested in my favourite building, the Odeon in Foregate Street.

The landmark cinema's original sign is in storage with the museums service, but she kindly supplied this picture of it.

She said: "We don't have an image of the complete sign, unfortunately, as it is so large.

"Each letter is about 1.5 metres high. The photo will give you an idea though."

What a sight those Odeon letters must have been in their 1950s heyday: gigantic, illuminated and bewitching to a public head over heels in love with the movies.

The sign is currently with the museums' collections centre, which was set up to be as publicly accessible as any museum store can be.

Ms Large said: "We took the sign into the collection because it was a special piece of Worcester history, even though we knew it was too large to display.

"It's part of the museums' role to capture and preserve those special objects that represent moments in history, even when we know we'll need to be creative with making them accessible.

"Most recently, we used this image of the sign as part of the MOTHS advent gallery trail around Worcester (December 2013), and we also included information about it in the exhibition at the City Museum in 2012 about the history of cinemas in Worcestershire."

Groups can book guided tours and the collection is open for free tours for everyone every September as part of Heritage Open Days.

Anyone interested in a tour of the collections centre should contact the County Museum at Hartlebury on 01299 250416 or visit www.museumsworcestershire.org.uk.
