A WORCESTERSHIRE MP has landed himself a top new job at the helm of Britain's Heritage Lottery Fund, it has emerged.

Sir Peter Luff, who is retiring from politics at the forthcoming General Election, is to become the chairman of the board of trustees on a three-year deal.

The appointment, made by Prime Minister David Cameron, carries a £43,000 salary and requires around two to three days work a week managing the grants it dishes out.

The chairmanship, which also puts him in charge of the National Heritage Memorial Fund, a sister body, is a huge accolade for the 60-year-old, who is stepping down after 23 years in parliament.

As chairman of a specially-appointed board of trustees, he will have to steer the direction of the hugely-important funds, the 'last resort' grant-in-aid kitties for saving, preserving or restoring Britain's heritage.

The Conservative, a former junior defence minister, told your Worcester News he was "delighted" to get the job.

Sir Peter said: "I am absolutely delighted, this is perfect for me - after politics I wanted to do something which I am passionate about and this ticks all the boxes.

"When I saw the job description I thought it was just what I was looking for, a lot of heritage money has been spent in my constituency over the years so I know just how important it is.

"I didn't want to do something just for the sake of doing it, this really appeals to me and I am looking forward to getting started."

The National Heritage Memorial Fund was set up in 1980 to save outstanding pieces of heritage in memory of those who have given their lives to the country.

In 1994, the body and its trustees took on the role of distributing the heritage share of National Lottery money for good causes, which operates through the Heritage Lottery Fund.

Although Sir Peter's appointment officially starts on Monday, March 30 for three years, he has agreed to only start work after the General Election in May once he steps down from representing Mid-Worcestershire.

Although it was decided upon by Mr Cameron, the announcement has been made by Culture Secretary Sajid Javid.
