THE people of Upton upon Severn came together to celebrate Commonwealth Day this week.

Councillors, choirs and school children all played their part and joined the rest of the country in the celebrations.

The Mayor of Upton, Peter Webb, started the celebrations with an official introduction, before pupils of Upton Primary School performed "Build It High".

Julie Wills, headteacher of the school, then gave a formal address which was followed by the Commonwealth affirmation, ready by Mayor Webb.

After the formal address and affirmation, crowds were treated to the singing talents of the church choir, Hanley Voices Choir and the children of Upton upon Severn Primary School.

The Commonwealth flag was raised by Dave Newman, of the Upton branch of the Royal British Legion.

The celebration went ahead on Monday, March 9, with all 53 nations under the Commonwealth partaking across the globe.
