MALVERN Theatres will receive a cash boost of £220,000 to make the venue more environmentally friendly and financially stable.

Malvern Hills District Council last week agreed to invest the chunk of funding to the theatre.

The money will go towards LED lighting which it is estimated will save the theatre £32,000 per year in electricity bills.

Councillor David Hughes, council leader, said: “We are committed to supporting the Malvern Theatres as an important cultural venue and attraction to visitors which supports the local economy. As landlords we are keen to invest in the building infrastructure, to give the theatres management team every opportunity to be self sufficient in the longer term. Together with the recent investment we made to upgrade the heating, this helps to make Malvern Theatres an attractive venue for performers and public alike."

Nic Lloyd, chief executive of Malvern Theatres, said: “I’m pleased that the council is making such a substantial long-term commitment to Malvern Theatres. This investment will significantly modernise the fabric of the building for many years to come.”

Work to change the lights is expected to start in the summer.
