YOUNG people in Worcestershire hoping to become a police cadet are encouraged to apply before the deadline next week.

Recruitment for the next intake of West Mercia Police's cadets scheme, which begins in September, is currently open to pupils who are in Year 11 at school.

The deadline is next Monday (February 23).

The two-year voluntary scheme aims to give young people a practical insight into policing and allow them to develop their skills and further their career.

Cadets will work towards a Level Two Award in Leadership and Team Skills awarded by the Institute of Leadership & Management (ILM), and equivalent to a GCSE A*-C.

To apply you must live in the West Mercia force area, be in Year 11 at school, be eligible to start at a sixth form or other further education college, begin an apprenticeship or seek employment in September and be able to attend weekly meetings and commit to 15 hours of voluntary work each quarter.

Sergeant Brian Gibbs said: "This is a great opportunity for young people to get involved in a scheme in which they can use their time valuably, find out more about the police and learn important skills whilst making new friends and having fun.

"We’d encourage anyone who is interested in a career in the police, to join the cadets.

"If you have any questions or would like to know more about the scheme, please send us an email."

To request an application form or for more information, email cadets@westmercia.pnn.police.uk.

These must be completed and returned by Monday.
