New name revealed for Worcester College of Technology

Malvern Gazette: Worcester College of Technology in Deansway Worcester College of Technology in Deansway

A NEW name can today be revealed for Worcester College of Technology - six weeks after the Government rejected an alternative amid claims it was "grossly insensitive".

Your Worcester News can reveal how the city site, which undergoing a merger in August, wants to now call itself 'Heart of Worcestershire College'.

The new suggestion comes after a previous bid by college chiefs to call it Worcestershire College was blocked by the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills.

At the start of June MP Sir Peter Luff severely criticised the suggestion, calling it "an aggressive act" that would marginalise South Worcestershire and Pershore colleges.

We then revealed how the Government rejected the name, saying it would be "misleading" and that the fresh branding should not "suggest pre-eminence" over other sites.

The Deansway-based institution is merging with Bromsgrove’s North East Worcestershire College in August.

Other colleges and MPs were consulted over the Heart of Worcestershire name, and unlike last time there were no objections.

A college spokesman said: "We are thankful for the positive support we have received during the consultation process. "We strongly believe that the proposed name of 'Heart of Worcestershire College' captures our future vision and importantly reflects the demographic area that our learners come from. "We are proud to be able to offer a local solution to education and training within Worcestershire.

"There are no objections to the proposed name and therefore we hope our application to the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills is successful."

Mr Luff said: "My point of view has always been about protecting South Worcestershire College.

"From that perspective I'm content with it - it'll do.

"Calling it the Heart of Worcestershire College is an entirely different thing from Worcestershire College."

A Government decision is expected imminently, which would pave the way for a major rebranding in time for September's new college year.

North East Worcestershire College also has a site in Redditch, which is where most of the administrative staff will be based.

Bosses at both colleges say the merger will allow more facilities to be shared, benefitting the students, and improve many other areas like links with employers.

How about leaving it as it is? As a student of the college I was not aware of any proposed name change otherwise I would have objected strongly. Consider the costs that will be involved with changing the paperwork etc. As the old saying goes,'if it ain't broke . . .'

I can't believe the ridiculous arguments against it being "Worcestershire College" .. Who calls Worcester Tech "Worcester Technical College"? "Heart of Worcestershire" will be "Worcestershire College" from day 1.
And, seriously, the kids going to it will be from within the catchment area.. they aren't going to be parents sat in Pershore going "hey, better change our plans, Worcester Tech has re-branded itself". Never heard such a load of cobblers.

It's all about somebody's ego isn't it - at somebody else's expense. And what a mouthful the new suggestion is.

Don't blame Luff, blame the politicians of very colour who took us into the EU. We have to open the market to the EU whenever we buy anything. If their tenders weren't acceptable we still couldn't build them ourselves so we went to Asia.

We are allowed to build our own warships, but the EU in its infinite wisdom decided that ships designed to supply warships are not warships.

Sorry danieled, but a case was put to the MOD about the supply ships demonstrating that just light arms / guns would comply with the EU regulations to build them in our shipyards.
As to blame those who took us into Europe, If you are old enough you would know that it was Ted Heath (horrible man) who conned us by asking us to vote for us trading in a Common Market, and alongside the EU.
WE were lied to by Heath and he started the situation we find ourselves in now as a Country run By an Unelected Europe.
We were lied to by Blair and we are being lied to now by our current politicians who do not deserve to represent England this wonderful country.
And good riddance to the Scots who because of historical defeats, wish to leave us, but not as much as lot's of us wish them away. As long as you take your Scottish MPs in Westminster with you, who for years have been voting on English issues while our MP's are not allowed to vote on Scottish issues.

After all the tens of thousands of pounds have been wasted on new signs, stationary, web design Etc., we'll all still call it Worcester Tech, or, if we are desperately eager to please "Heart Of Worcestershire College Which Used To Be The Tech". It would have been as difficult to call the college 'Worcester College' as much as calling it 'North East Worcestershire College' as it is a merger between the two. For simplicity, I don't see anything wrong with 'Worcestershire College' and I am sure the word 'Heart' will get dropped at some time.

Besides, the Bromsgrove and Redditch campuses can hardly be said to be in the geographical heart of Worcestershire so it's not exactly accurate anyway.

If this is all Sir Peter has to worry about, roll on next May when he can put his feet up and concentrate on his hardly deserved knighthood which will probably get him the odd directorship or three.

Quickly looking past Peter Luff, it is important that a name is settled on since the students that graduate will need certification of their training, from a colledge which has a name which states that it has a sound history of excellence.
And what do we see, those who for too long have had much misplaced influence on this country are out there dipping their little political fingers into the pot when this is simply an educational situation which should be resolved by those involved in the Education of our young people of our future, NOT PEN PUSHERS.
