THERE will be something old, something new, something borrowed and something GREEN for one bride set to walk down the aisle on Saturday.

Like most brides, Anne-Marie Darroch will be wearing a traditional veil in her hair but it is the Vale of Evesham asparagus in her bouquet which will turn a few heads.

Miss Darroch, from Arboretum, Worcester, will have the first crop of Evesham-grown asparagus in her flowers when she marries Paul Harley at Laughern Hill in Wichenford.

The 39-year-old vowed to feature the stems in her floral arrangements as the first day of Evesham's asparagus season falls on her birthday, April 23.

The green stems will also make up her bridesmaids’ bouquets and wedding party’s buttonholes.

Asparamancer Jemima Packington, who has starred on Celebrity Big Brother spin off shows, will tip guests off about their future and there will be asparagus-themed surprises throughout the day.

The couple's wedding day also falls on Primrose Day and has prompted the yellow and green theme.

The communications and marketing manager said: “I used to work in Pershore and have written lots of features on asparagus.

"I used to buy copious amounts during the season, and with it being synonymous with my birthday, it felt apt that it should appear at my wedding.”

Through her previous job the bride-to-be had the contacts to source the early asparagus – which will also feature in her menu.

“I wanted to do something unique and the florist was quite excited when I told her my plans. I can’t wait to see the bouquet.

“Given the renowned properties of asparagus though, we may even have to have a separate toilet – with an aspara-flush.”
