Police officers to sleep rough in Worcester tonight

Malvern Gazette: Police officers to sleep rough in Worcester tonight Police officers to sleep rough in Worcester tonight

POLICE officers in Worcester will brave the elements tonight in a bid to raise funds and awareness of homelessness in the city.

Officers along with colleagues from the West Mercia Probation Trust and outreach workers from St Paul’s Hostel will be taking part in a sleep-out outside the Elgar Statue from 9pm tonight until 6am tomorrow morning.

The event will raise money for Worcester homelessness organisations St Paul’s Hostel and the Maggs Day Centre and was the brainchild of Detective Constable Zoey Carter, who said the greatest problem faced by many offenders when they are released from prison is finding housing.

“Many find they are homeless and return to crime to fund themselves,” she said.

“We want to break that cycle of offending, so we work closely with local authorities and homelessness charities to get these people some kind of accommodation and off the streets.

“We organised the sleep out to raise money for the amazing charities we work with – like St Paul’s and the Maggs Day Centre – as well as raise awareness with the public about the problems of homelessness in South Worcestershire.”

The Integrated Offender Management team at Worcester Police Station works with offenders to discourage them from returning to crime and, if they do, gets them prosecuted as soon as possible.

Marco Gualano from the West Mercia Probation Trust, which works alongside the team, said it was important those without housing in Worcester were given as much help as they need.

“Many of the people we supervise are reliant on the services provided by St Paul’s and the Maggs Day Centre and they used them on a daily basis,” he said.

“As such they are a very good cause, so we wanted to do something to support them and raise awareness about the important work they do.”

Ginette Sadler from St Paul’s Hostel – which provides 46 beds, a ‘dry’ house, a substance misuse service and other services – said the organisation’s Outreach Team works with people sleeping rough to find them accommodation.

“The team consists of specialist workers and operates a tailored approach to address the needs of rough sleepers,” she said.

“St Paul’s is currently running a 16-week Night Assessment Centre which includes a breakfast club and the Outreach Team on site each morning.

“Funds raised through this event will be very gratefully received.”

The DRUG LAWS police try to enforce INCREASE HOMELESSNESS (and cost us a fortune) - put the money into rehab - savings & tax revenue can go to ALCOHOL rehab, NHS funds - and Hostels / (looselyish) Supervised Shared Accommodation...

Crime would obviously drop quickly if the bottom is taken out of the market and hard drug abuse - well, it's not going to go up much and may well go down loads - depending on which studies you read... Less STEALING for SCAG, either way...

"Legalise everything and that will make everything okay, stoners will say anything to justify their filthy illegal habit" - No, that's just you putting words into some-else's mouth,..

a) I said LEGALISE - that implies LEGAL REGULATION, Age Restrictions, Oversight (though perhaps a little less than the hit & miss methadone programs)...

b) Pot can be taken 'cleanly'...

c) The prejudice against smokers is NAZI-LIKE...

People like you have DESTROYED BRITAIN - with your DISUNITING, Divide & Conquer, Union-Destroying DRACON WAYS... You people drive half the world to drugs & drink, not to mention the brink of WAR, Drug-Lord-Power-Frea

... Ok, I said 'LEGALISE' on a different article post to be fair - but that's what I meant... I consider the crimes against humanity & freedoms in the name of Drugs & Terror to be the most vile aspects of the New World Order (same as the Old One - but more US-BASED) - Drugs, WMDs, Gold & Oil CONTROL...

The banks knowingly turn a blind eye to their own laundering of 100s of Billions of Dollars of Drug Money a year... The Drug Laws are just another way to SUBJUGATE ALL...

One way to keep drinkers off the street (apart from Hostels ++ & The Walk-In Center would be to HALF (at least) TAX on PUB BOOZE & DOUBLE (at least) TAX on SUPERMARKET BOOZE... I'm not into price-fixing for booze (it's too-mature an industry) but LEGALISED TAXED DRUGS, why not?? --- and NO, NOT ALL DRUGS - tried & tested & naturally occurring to start with...

Points made, have a good day. I'm NOT SHOUTING.

Any policies that would restrict alcohol sales is fine by me, not sure why you feel reducing tax for pubs would help it's a part of the industry that's on it's last legs, and would probably encourage more drink driving and more illegal alcohol
(taxing supermarket alcohol)

Anyone who post's with excessive use of capital letters is shouting

Self harm eh, most people who self harm like to advertise it, most of the people who really want to do themselves in have probably done it by now.
Yes let's prevent drug addiction by keeping it illegal!
