A MALVERN church needs to find at least £1,744 to restore the names of war veterans on its Remembrance memorial.

The memorial in the churchyard at Holy Trinity, Link Top, was erected in 1920, but decades of erosion mean the names carved on it have become more or less illegible.

Now the church is hoping to have the names re-carved in time for Remembrance Sunday next year, which will also mark the 100th anniversary of the start of the First World War.

The work has been costed by a stonemason at £4,149, and the church now has to raise the money.

The vicar, the Rev David Nichol, said: “We already have £676 which has been given towards the work. This means we need to find £3,473.

“We are trying for a grant from the War Memorials Trust but even if they were to give the maximum grant we still need to find £1,744.

We are hoping that people who have a personal connection with the memorial or those named on it might wish to make a donation or it may be that people feel the memorial is an important part of our local and national history and should be maintained.

“If people have personal stories about people named on the memorial then it would wonderful to collect those stories and save them for posterity.” Anyone wishing to make donations to the fund can send cheques payable to Holy Trinity Malvern to 2 North Malvern Road, Malvern WR14 4LR.
