AT the April meeting, after Jerusalem was sung, Jill Thompson, president, introduced speaker Gill Baines, the Malvern Town Crier. Gill was dressed in her full regalia and started by ringing her bell and shouting “Oyez, oyez, oyez”

before reading the poem she had composed especially for the occasion.

Gill then invited members to ask her questions about her voluntary job as town crier and they asked lots of questions on various aspects of her job.

She explained that she had started as a Crier in Cornwall before returning to Malvern to live and when she saw the job advertised here she applied and, to her amazement, was accepted.

Gill told members that she attends balls, weddings and other functions as well as crying round Malvern and also gave us a short history of the crier or messenger.

After the coffee break Jill read the correspondence and gave out the notices and asked each member if they wished to go on the committee for the coming year. The next meeting is on Tuesday, May 7, when it will be a joint resolutions meeting and annual meeting and will be at the United Reformed Church Hall (rear entrance) in Malvern Link. Doors open 10am, start 10.30am.

New members and visitors are always welcome – for more information, phone Jill Thompson on 01684 566540.
