A CONSERVATION charity has joined a national campaign calling on the Government to better protect our seas.

Worcestershire Wildlife Trust gathered more than 350 signatures and sent them to a Parliamentary reception in London this week.

Thousands more signatures have been presented by wildlife trusts from all over the country.

Wendy Carter, communications manager for Worcestershire Wildlife Trust, said more needs to be done to protect seas around the UK.

“Our marine environment is in decline. In the last 400 years, two species of whale and dolphin have gone extinct in our waters and basking shark numbers have declined by 95 per cent,” she said. “Even species that were once abundant are now critically endangered.

“For far too long we’ve been taking our seas for granted, taking too much with too little care.”
