YOUNG thespians are embarking on a journey to the Emerald City in search of a mysterious wizard.

Upton's Peppercorns youth group has spent five months perfecting their own version of family favourite The Wizard of Oz.

The results will be on show at Memorial Hall from Thursday to Saturday, September 7 to 9, at 7.30pm.

Audiences will be treated to a host of lavish costumes, and singalong songs including Over the Rainbow and Follow the Yellow Brick Road.

Peppercorns chairman Gill Goldfinch said the 40 or so children involved, aged seven to 16, had had a great time rehearsing the show.

"The children were really keen to do this show and they've been having a great time getting it ready," she said.

"All their hard work is paying off because they've got it down to a tee and we're raring to go."

The Wizard of Oz is the Peppercorn's fifth annual production, following successful performances of shows including Oliver! and Annie.

Ms Goldfinch said she thought the shows were getting better every year as the group continued to grow in size.

"Our shows are always well received and we're hoping this one will be the best yet. Our numbers have swelled since we first began and, while some members have graduated to the Pepperpot Players, we've still got some that have been here right from the start."

After the show the Peppercorns will take a well earned break. Then in April 2007 it all begins again, when the company starts auditioning for its next show.

Tickets for The Wizard of Oz cost £5 from Upton Post Office in Old Street.
