A LONG-standing member of Malvern Hills Conservator has resigned to join the company promoting plans for a cable car on the Worcestershire Beacon.

Clive Smith's resignation from the board is being announced via a statement due to be read out at the board's meeting tonight (Thursday).

His statement reads: "I am tendering my resignation from the board with immediate effect.

"This is because I have been offered a role with the Malvern Cable Car Company, a project that I believe in the medium to long term holds great benefits not only for Malvern but also for the Conservators.

"In many years of public life I have always endeavoured to hold the highest standards of probity and honesty and to be both a board member and be associated with the cable car project would be seen in many eyes, mine included, as a conflict of interest. In passing I am aware that this view is not held in other places but that is up to individuals and their judgement.

"May I conclude by stating that I have enjoyed my time on the board and the friendship and support of both members and officers and I look forward to a fruitful relationship in the future."
