EXTINCTION Rebellion held a vigil in Malvern remembering 'Earth defenders' who have been murdered.

Members of the group tied ribbons to the railings on Belle Vue Terrace to commemorate 227 environmental and land rights activists 'murdered in a single year in countries around the world from Canada to the Philippines'.

Extinction Rebellion was joined by members of Bright Earth Buddhist Temple in the vigil for justice, where political prisoners in the UK were also remembered.

Iszi Jones, a charity worker from Malvern, said 'Many people do not know that the UK has political prisoners.

"There were 14 candles burned throughout the vigil, with each light representing a brave activist from Just Stop Oil, HS2 Rebellion and Palestine Action who have been put in prison in the UK for taking direct action for climate, environmental, or social justice.”

Supporters also talked to passers-by about Extinction Rebellion’s plans for a gathering in London in April.

Cathy Groves, a local Extinction Rebellion member, said: “On April 21 tens of thousands of people will gather in London to demand action from our government on the climate emergency.

"Dubbed ‘The Big One’, people from all walks of life and a variety of organisations will meet outside Parliament to raise their voices and take part in a massive act of compassionate civil resistance against the government’s failure of responsible leadership.”

Extinction Rebellion Malvern has been holding a Vigil for the Earth every Saturday for the last two years.

The vigil takes place on Belle Vue Terrace steps from 12pm to 1pm every Saturday and all are welcome to attend.
