MORE people will be able to get free food donated by the town's businesses thanks to a charity fundraiser.

Malvern Link Community Fridge raised in total £10,232 to help improve the existing facilities.

The sum is set towards a new community kitchen, entrance area, more fridges, and refurbished toilets, which aims to create an enhanced community space.

The fridge located at the Malvern Link with Cowleigh church on Church Road is currently open two days a week but with new enhancements it is hoped to be open more.

Sarah Maxfield-Phillips, ministry leader of Malvern Link with Cowleigh, said: “I am actually shocked we managed to do it.

“It will give us a chance to collect waste food to be stored and given to more people.

“Since opening just less than a year ago, there has definitely been a rise in people needing the service.

“We want a big community hub - the more people using the space and the more we can limit food waste, the better.”

The community fridge used the Malvern District Councils Spacehive Scheme to help fundraise the revamp.

This involved the council providing over £5,000 from its Destination Zero fund - which aims to reduce carbon emissions in the local area - and their People Make Places fund.

The refurbishment will hopefully continue the fridges mission in reducing waste by enabling the charity to store more food and serve hot meals out of the church.

Cllr Tom Wells, portfolio holder for Community Services at Malvern Hills District Council, added: “It is wonderful to see that Malvern Link Community Fridge have surpassed their fundraising target and has raised over £10,200.

“The project will see the space grow, which will enable more people to benefit from this brilliant service.”

The community fridge is open on Mondays between 10.30am to 12pm and Wednesdays 3.40pm to 4.30pm.
