A Malvern man was killed by his brother with a guitar.

Paul Hawkesford-Barnes was found dead earlier this year, with head and upper body injuries.

Now, his brother Steven Barnes has pleaded guilty to manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility for the killing of his brother, West Midlands Police has confirmed.

Mr Hawkesford-Barnes was found dead at his mother's home in Hopedale Close, Coventry.

Police state that the injuries Mr Hawkesford-Barnes suffered suggested he had been subjected to a "sustained assault" and that a blood-stained, damaged guitar was found nearby.

Barnes also admitted to assaulting their mother, aged in her 80s and suffering with dementia.

She was found with facial injuries and has since died, but not as a result of her injuries.

The pair were discovered by a carer for Barnes' mother who also received support from family members - including Barnes - who stayed with her overnight due to her poor health.

It is understood that Barnes had struggled with caring for her.

Barnes, 64 and of Telfer Road in Coventry, was arrested after he turned up at a police station in Skegness on the day Mr Hawkesford-Barnes body was discovered.

Today (September 30), Barnes admitted the charges at Leamington Justice Centre.

He has been remanded in custody ahead of the sentencing on November 18.

Mr Hawkesford-Barnes's family paid tribute to him following his death.

Wife Juliet said: “I don’t know what I can say that would ever describe the impact of the loss of Paul to me, our daughters, his two older children and our family.

“We are devastated and life will never be the same again. It helps somewhat to read all the lovely comments people have written about him, he was loved by everyone that knew him.”

Son, Kyle, added: “I thought I had years ahead with you. You died my hero."

Detective Inspector Ranj Sangha of West Midlands Police said at the time: “Our thoughts remain with Mr Hawkesford-Barnes’ family at this difficult time who are being supported by our specialist officers."
