FLY-HALF Jono Lance is set to see a specialist over a back problem that forced him to sit out Worcester Warriors’ 27-21 victory over Ospreys at Sixways.

The Australian playmaker was set to feature in the European Challenge Cup clash after captaining Worcester to a memorable 38-27 win at Stade Francais last weekend.

But the 28-year-old suffered a twinge in his back, leading head coach Rory Duncan to give Jamie Shillcock the number 10 jersey and fit-again utility back Scott van Breda a place on the bench.

“Jono picked up an injury at the back end of the week and we thought it would be best to give him a rest for this game,” Duncan said.

“I think he has still got a consultation with the specialist who is going to tell us exactly what is going on but at this moment in time I am not too sure what exactly the diagnosis is.

“We didn’t want to take any chances in this game.”

With Lance watching on from the stands Shillcock grasped his opportunity, scoring the opening try and landing three conversions as Warriors led 21-0 at half-time.

The 21-year-old who was making his first appearance since undergoing knee surgery in early September then landed two penalties to complete a 17-point haul and seal a third successive win for Warriors in all competitions.

“It was good to see Shilly do the full 80 minutes,” Duncan added.

“He has got a big boot on him and he showed that he can kick goals under pressure.”
