Malvern Town 3, Willenhall Town 5.

THIS game between the bottom two teams in the Baker Joiner Midland Football Alliance turned into disaster for Malvern as they slumped back to the bottom of the table.

The hosts seemed intimidated by the more experienced Willenhall team and the Langland Stadium club paid the price.

In the second minute Mike Robertson was clear but he shot wide, but two minutes later a free-kick was played to Mitch Fellows and he rounded his defender and slotted the ball home for Willenhall’s first.

Fellows was through again in the 13th minute but he fluffed the chance. However, a minute later Malvern’s defence played a square ball just outside the box and the same player nipped in to grab his second.

Malvern then fought back and Leigh Downing fired home from just outside the area in the 17th minute.

Seven minutes later a cross by Rob Hendry saw Willenhall keeper Liam Flynn miss the ball and DJ Pitt chested it into the net. Malvern were now on top and in the 35th minute Pitt’s shot was pushed round for a corner by Flynn.

Willenhall struck back and five minutes later the ball was played across the box and Craig Oldfield fired home from an oblique angle.

Malvern came out strongly in the second-half but failed to make any impression and it was no surprise when Willenhall grabbed their fourth goal in the 65th minute.

Daniel Payne in the Malvern goal could not hold onto the ball and Fellows grabbed his hat-trick.

Willenhall completed their vital victory in the 85th minute when substitute Ansell Gayle broke free and fired the ball home.

Malvern were eventually rewarded for their hard work in the second-half when the ball was played through for Pitt to fire it home two minutes from time.

Malvern Town caretaker-manager Mike Pitt said: “Even though we lost against Willenhall, I’m chuffed with the football we played.

“We’re having spells of five or six minutes of playing good football in games and then 10 minutes of just smashing it.”

Tomorrow, Malvern have another home game against Boldmere St Michaels in the league (ko 3pm) before they entertain local rivals Westfields on Tuesday in another league game (7.45pm).
