Oadby Town 2, Malvern Town 0.

DISALLOWED goals, the woodwork and some good goalkeeping saw unlucky Malvern Town crash out of the FA Cup at the preliminary round stage.

Malvern started to attack straight away and within a few minutes the ball was played through to new signing Chris Cornes and he slotted the ball home.

But the assistant referee flagged him offside much to everyone’s surprise.

Leigh Downing sent a chip just over the bar on 12 minutes, Cornes corner went to Craig Selby but Wayne Connolly, in the Oadby goal, pushed it over the bar.

In the 21st minute, Selby knocked the ball to Cornes and he turned his man and fired the ball home but the referee blew the whistle and claimed Cornes had fouled a man as he turned.

Two minutes later Cornes spotted Connolly off his line and sent in a lob from just inside the opponents half which Connolly had to push over the bar for a corner.

Oadby then had their only chance of the first-half and Jack Stern was called upon to save with his legs.

Selby’s run into the box two minutes later saw Connolly turning the shot round the post.

Duncan Edwards then hit the post from Cornes’ corner.

In the 40th minute, Oadby had a corner which hit a Malvern defender and Stern had to tip the deflection over the crossbar.

The visitors started the second-half and within two minutes Jamie March had to clear off Oadby’s goal-line.

But Oadby had the wind in their favour in the second-half and, as it got more powerful throughout the half, started to help them.

The fact that Malvern had not scored gave them hope.

In the 57th minute a corner was crossed into Malvern’s box and after several half-clearances fell to Andrew Gunderlach to push the ball home.

Malvern struggled to get their game together again and their shots and passes were being carried out in the wind.

In the 74th minute, Oadby broke down the left-hand side and crossed the ball to the back post where Hardeep Phull was waiting to head home.

This woke Malvern up and two minutes later, Connolly turned Bryan Craven’s shot round the post and from the resulting corner Malvern hit the crossbar again.

Five minutes from time, a free-kick was played into the area and Troy Wood’s shot was turned over by Connolly and from the resulting corner, Wood managed to fire over from about five yards.

Malvern travel to Cradley Town tomorrow for a first qualifying round match in the FA Vase. They have already travelled their in the extra preliminary round of the FA Cup earlier in August when they returned with their only win of the season 4-3.

Providing that game does not finish in a draw, Malvern will entertain Stratford Town on Tuesday (ko 7.45pm).
