A “MASSIVE” task awaits Malvern with the visit of National Three Midlands leaders Ampthill tomorrow (ko 3pm), according to director of rugby Dave Robins.

Ampthill arrive at Spring Lane in formidable form, currently top of the league, seven points clear of second-placed Bromsgrove and with two games in hand.

But, despite accepting his side face a tough test, Robins is buoyed after Malvern stopped their recent rot last week with a 26-16 extra-time win over Whitchurch in the North Midlands Cup quarter-final.

After what proved to be a welcome cup distraction, Malvern return to league action looking to climb away from the drop-zone, starting against Ampthill.

Robins says his side are at full strength for the visit of the leaders with as Richard Fleming returns at full-back, Simon Daws also starts in the back row after also being unavailable for the Whitchurch clash.

Dominic Murphy returns at loose head prop and his brother Andy starts on the bench after both recovered from injury.

Robins said: “It’s a massive game for us. They will be hot favourites and we will start as pretty big underdogs.

“This is the biggest game of the season at Spring Lane. The squad is as strong as we can put out. We’ve got our backs to the wall as regards survival.

“It’s going to take a lot of effort now. It’s a question of what sort of resolve we’ve got.

“The cup win does give the lads a bit more confidence.

“It was a welcome respite from the league, it had all the thrills of cup rugby.”
