Matt Turner's heavily deflected strike put the Hillsiders ahead after 10 minutes only for Craig Lancastle to level from the spot moments later.

Kyonn Evans soon put Malvern back in front but Lancastle restored parity again by the half-hour mark.

That was how it stayed until Harry Clark's 59th-minute strike with Town well and truly in the box seat when Turner doubled the lead 20 minutes from the end.

Things started to get interesting when Ben Miller was sin binned for appealing the penalty that saw Lancastle bring up his hat-trick, albeit on the rebound after a save from Haydn Whitcombe.

However, Evans got Malvern's fifth, rendering academic Curtis Smith's temporary dismissal shortly after Miller had been allowed back on.

It means Town have opened their Hellenic League Division One West account with 12 goals and maximum points from two matches.

“There was plenty for us to learn from this game,” said co-manager Dene Whittal-Williams.

“To concede two penalties and losing two players to the sin bin in the latter stages of the game was disappointing but we managed to withstand the pressure that was created.

“Thornbury proved to be tough opponents, they worked extremely hard and made it difficult for us to get into the game.

“We went 1-0 up against the run of play if we’re honest having received a couple of warnings but to go in at the break at 2-2 was frustrating having led twice.

“We matched our hosts physically and in the second half especially, having discussed our defensive shape at half-time, we were able to get into better attacking situations.

“We created more and more as the game went on and scored three very good goals through Harry Clark, Milky (Turner) and Kyonn Evans, who grabbed his second of the night.

“It was great that we picked up another three points. We are learning all of the time and we will take this into training this week so that we are ready for Saturday."

Malvern hit the road again on Saturday, taking on higher-ranked Longlevens in the Hellenic League's Bluefin Sports Challenge Cup (3pm).
