JOINT-boss Dene Whittal-Williams hopes Malvern Town can repeat their giant-killing exploits and prove they are ready to take the next step by landing some silverware.

The Hillsiders finish the campaign with a Smedley Crooke Memorial Cup final against higher-ranked opponents Lye Town at Alvechurch on Saturday (2.30pm).

Victory would be a fourth over Midland Football League Premier Division opposition – one level above Malvern’s – this season having seen off Boldmere St Michaels in the FA Cup and Loughborough University and Quorn in this competition.

And having ended up fourth in the West Midlands (Regional) League Premier Division, just five points off a promotion berth, Whittal-Williams wants to see another example of how Town plan to push on next season.

“It is a good one to go out on after an up-and-down season,” said Whittal-Williams.

“We are really keen to finish on a high, we know Lye will be a decent side but if our ambitions are at the level above then we have to prove we can do it now.

“It will be a good day and we are looking forward to the challenge. Hopefully we can come away with the result that we feel our overall season deserves.

“We will discuss the bits where we are slightly more vulnerable as well as focusing on the areas where we know we can cause damage.

“Lee (Hooper, joint-manager) and I are ambitious and as a group the lads know they can play higher, these games can galvanise that belief.

“The Quorn game (semi-final) typified what we have become, which is a very decent side at our level on our day.

“We will have a right good go. There is no pressure on us, we are now in a position where we can relax and enjoy the occasion.”

By the time the match takes place both sides will have been out of action for two weeks, possibly affecting the momentum built up by Malvern towards the end of the campaign.

Town racked up 20 goals in a four-match winning flourish at the finish but Whittal-Williams reckons enough has been done to mitigate the delay.

“We have carried on training and will go into the game with the same optimism and positivity we always do,” he added.

“When we train we try to be as game related as we can anyway and the lads are the key drivers, they all want some silverware as much as the club and Lee and I do.

“We are not going to get hung up about the gap, Lye are in the same position.”

Matt Turner is unavailable but Whittal-Williams anticipates having an 18-strong squad to select from.
